Grandmaster Famouspinky,

I supposed u r younger than me but your memory is weaker than me. I bought DBS Q1 sgd14.68 n Q3 sgd14.95. No reason for me to buy now mah 🙂

Did u bought? If u haven' t bought, Tom should do so if prices were to fall further. Is cheap, don' t waste the opportunity. Good luck 🙂

Hi guys,

Just to share..those who have bought DBS at sgd15 or below today, do treasure your DBS shares. It is not everytime so lucky that we can have this kind of opportunity to buy at good price. If I recall correctly, after the global financial crisis in 2008 n euro crisis in 2011, after 5 years at 2016 then we get this kind of opportunity to buy DBS at cheap price. Hence do think twice, thrice or more if u were to sell it at a marginal profit.

As an ordinary investor we tend to take profit fast bcos we own only a small fraction of DBS. Assuming if u owned the entire DBS u would not want to sell just for a few % of profits. A sale decision does not differ whether we r small or big investors, thus do treasure this rare opportunity n sell at a reasonable price n gain a fair profit for yourselves. Just in case, those who did not read what I wrote in DBS thread, my DBS valuation is sgd20. Feel free to get yourselves updated with a second opinion from other analysts to sell at a more reasonable price. Most importantly, b patience, the reward will definitely or I should use the word GUARANTEE come, as time goes by. Thank you 🙂

Hi Hei,

I presumed u already have your own thought about DBS n u just want to know my view as a second opinion. Before I answer your question, let me bring out another member, Bryan, asked me y should we buy genting now if economy were to deteriot further?

If I were to twist his question to y should we buy DBS now if there r more potential oil n gas bad debt. Same question asked in different ways. Likewise the way which I had answered him, a price of sgd15 n below is a safe n comfortable price to buy DBS for long term bcos it had factored in a safety margin of 30% off it' s operating earnings. Thus I will not explain further on how the safety margin was derived bcos it was mentioned yesterday in my reply to him.

However if u were to ask me what is the good price for DBS I would say at sgd12.30. As I have shared numerous times the valuation formula is " net assets (net book value) + stream of future cashflow at present value" . At sgd12.30, it assume zero contribution of operating earning from DBS to its valuation, it' s valuation only comprised its adjusted net book value. In this scenario, it is assume either DBS is not making any profit or they r making losses. This is also the most conservative scenerio bcos at this price if dbs were to bankrupt, most likely i will get back my capital. This is not a valid assumption bcos DBS operating earnings was never in red for the past 10 years. Even during the 2008 financial crisis, it only retreated less than 5%.

Hence, a 30% margin of safety for local banks r more to safeguard their volatilities in stock price than it' s actual earning, unlike genting. 2 months ago when I first started writing in DBS thread, I already mentioned to buy at sgd15 n below, thus the same price applied 2 months later. Nothing have change with regard to DBS fundamental, the only thing is fear n pessimism revisited the stock mkt.

besides my view, shares buy back by DBS was also done below n slightly above sgd15. Unlike some other investors who view it as a share price support, my view is DBS buy back was bcos the shares r cheap in historical term, there is no need for them to support their share price. They r a good company, everyone will be snatching their shares as hot pancake once it is trading at a cheap price. To safeguard ourselves against any unforeseen volatilities, always buy in batches. One can buy at own comfortable price of sgd15 n below n next entry at sgd12.30 n below if volatility persist. Thank you 🙂

At times when mkt is pessimistic, it is good to divert our attention from stock mkt to something that can improve our investment knowledge. Learning from someone who has more than 50 years of investment experience is definitely worth spending our time. A simple paragraph stated below carried great wisdom.

The same year that Buffett began buying ConocoPhillips shares, he described his overall strategy as an investor this way:
Long-term competitive advantage in a stable industry is what we seek in a business. If that comes with rapid organic growth, great... A truly great business must have an enduring " moat" that protects excellent returns on invested capital. The dynamics of capitalism guarantee that competitors will repeatedly assault any business " castle" that is earning high returns. Therefore a formidable barrier such as a company' s being the low-cost producer or possessing a powerful world-wide brand is essential for sustained success.

Thank you very much.

I asked because the chart looks bad.

No wonder CEO Gupta bought DBS shares at around $13.
