China Shares Rebound on End of Circuit Breaker, Yuan Rise
8 January 2016 10:32

China stocks rebound slightly after the regulator scrapped the circuit breaker system late Thursday, which was triggered twice over the past four sessions. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gains 1.5% at 3170.67, led by coal, steel and non-ferrous metal shares. The Shenzhen Composite Index edges up 0.6% to 1970.23, while the ChiNext Price Index slips 0.5% to 2245.59, recovering from a 5% intraday loss.

China' s securities regulator suspended the circuit breaker mechanism, which has been criticized for accelerating selloffs and magnifying panic. " The halt of the circuit breaker system can only decelerate but not reverse the decline on the market, because the valuations remain too high," says Li Lifeng, chief analyst at Sinolink Securities.

China' s central bank set yuan' s midpoint reference slightly stronger as Beijing moves to ease concern over the currency' s depreciation pressure.

Nevertheless, the China stocks selloff may continue, albeit at a slower pace, as pessimism is unlikely to dissipate overnight, say analysts. " The regulator fails to educate investors about new reforms and caused unnecessary panic on the market," adds Li.

China suspends stock circuit breaker days after introduction
January 7, 2016: 11:16 PM

China' s securities regulator suspended a new stock circuit-breaker after a sell off forced local exchanges to shut for the second day this week, signalling that the country' s leadership may reconsider or change the system.

The China Securities Regulatory Commission announced the suspension on its official microblog account on Thursday night. The decision came hours after CSRC officials held an emergency meeting to discuss conditions on the nation' s tumbling stock market, according to a person familiar with the discussions who asked not to He is named because he was not authorised to speak publicly.

China' s CSI 300 Index plunged 7.2% on Thursday, triggering an automatic shutdown within 30 minutes of the open, as declines in the yuan rattled investor confidence in the world' s second-largest economy. The nation' s market circuit breakers, which halt exchanges for 15 minutes after a 5% drop in the CSI 300 and for the rest of the day after a 7% retreat, have been criticised by analysts for exacerbating losses as investors scramble to exit positions before getting locked in.

China' s threshold for trading halts looks " quite tight" versus circuit breakers in other markets, Deutsche Bank AG strategists wrote in a report this week. In the US, trading is halted temporarily after declines of 7% and 13% in the Standard & Poor' s 500 Index, and only suspended for the rest of the day if losses reach 20%.

Chinese regulators moved to ease one of investors' concerns earlier Thursday, imposing a new limit on the amount of stock that major corporate shareholders can sell. That followed intervention by government funds to prop up shares on Tuesday, according to people familiar with the matter.

Authorities are being forced to scale back efforts to let markets have more sway after an end to three months of relative calm on the nation' s equity exchanges. Policy makers went to extreme lengths to support shares in the midst of a US $ 5 trillion ($ 7.2 trillion) rout last summer, including ordering stock purchases by state funds, suspending initial public offerings and allowing trading halts that froze hundreds of mainland-listed shares.

Yuan Swings

China' s central bank is considering new measures to prevent high volatility in the exchange rate and will continue to intervene in the currency market, according to people familiar with the matter. Measures being considered aim to restrict arbitrage between onshore and offshore rates, the people said. The monetary authority did not immediately reply to a fax seeking comment.

For Hugh Young, a managing director at Aberdeen Asset Management Plc, China' s efforts to intervene in the stock market are counterproductive.

" Often, the more measures the government takes, the more it encourages people to go against it," Young said. " They should regulate the market to make sure rules are clear and people abide by the rules. They should not worry as stock prices go up or down. "

Wall Street tumbles on China worries

With US stocks now on pace for their worst start to the year since 2000, investors are questioning whether Wall Street is headed for a bona fide bear market. The truth is, many stocks are already there.

US stocks have fallen nearly 4.0 percent so far in 2016, and more than 40 percent of the stocks in the benchmark S & P500 stock index are 20 percent or more off of their highs, the definition of a bear market.

In addition to the 219 stocks in the S & P 500 index that are down 20 percent or more from their 52-week highs, there are 374 stocks off more than 10 percent, said Ryan Detrick, market strategist at Kimble Charting Solutions in Cincinnati, Ohio.

" US equity markets are extremely oversold to start this year, so a bounce could happen at anytime. The bigger issue is the deterioration of stocks under the surface," said Detrick.

It may get worse before it improves: shares still are pricey and investors who say they can not calibrate geopolitical woes such as weakness in China' s economy and war in the Middle East are sticking to the sidelines for now There seems little reason for optimism..

But the sluggish start does not necessarily point to a year of losses. January often is a bad month for stocks and all of the recent selling has beaten down some shares low enough to interest selective investors.

The average stock in the S & P 500 is off almost 21.3 percent from its 52-week high, according to Detrick, suggesting there is a wide swath of stocks that have been beaten down and may be able to provide value.

" There are very legitimate reasons for concerns. You could argue the market response has been very rational. At the same time, how much have things really changed? I would argue not much," said Brad McMillan, chief investment officer for Commonwealth Financial in Waltham, Mass.

" I could make a case that we could may see a number of positive surprises here in the US" , he said.

US stocks still appear to be expensive, with the forward price earnings ratio of the S & P 500 at 16.4, below the 17.4 reached in March but still at highs not seen since 2004.

But those valuations could be exaggerated by a smaller group of stocks that have driven the S & P over the last year and are priced richly. Amazon, part of the so-called " FANG" group of stocks that helped keep the S & P 500 near steady in 2015 , has a PE for the next 12 months of 114.3, for example. Netflix is even higher, showing a ratio of 368.5 for the next 12 months. The FANG group includes Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Google.

With the sluggish start to the year for the FANG stocks, the broader market indices have lost a major source of support. The outsized effect of the market leaders last year is illustrated by the performance of a pair of ETF' s. For 2015, the Guggenheim S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF lost 2.6 percent for the year while the SPDR S & P 500 ETF gained 1.3 percent on a total return basis.

But through Wednesday, that spread had narrowed considerably, with the equal weight ETF down 4.9 percent over the past month while the SPDR ETF was down 4.6 percent.

That does not mean investors should blindly buy any stocks that have lost ground.

" The problem with things that are cheap is that they can always get cheaper," said Randy Frederick, managing director of trading and derivatives for Charles Schwab in Austin, Texas.

The technical picture for stocks has also deteriorated, as losses on Wednesday pushed the S & P 500 below a key support level around the 1,990 mark which could result in a full retest of its August lows near 1,870, according to Jeff Saut, chief investment strategist at Raymond James Financial in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The lows seen in August 2105 were partly triggered by worries over a slowdown in China' s economic growth, and this remains a concern as reflected in a further slide in the Chinese yuan on Thursday to the lowest level in March 2011.

However, other geopolitical factors are now in play also including tensions between oil producers Saudi Arabia and Iran and a nuclear bomb test by North Korea.

" I do not know how to handicap the Saudi Arabia and Iran war, an H-bomb in Korea, so I am not doing anything right here," said Saut.

The recent declines in US stock prices also raised concerns that a weak January could result in a down year for stocks, but there is scant evidence for that idea. The current bull market, now nearing its seventh year, has shown resilience for several years running , and historic data shows that a bad start does not a bad year portend. In one third of the years since 1945, shares in the S & P 500 hit their yearly lows in the first month of the year, said Sam Stovall of S & P Capital IQ.

With all the headwinds potentially facing stocks this year, it' s not time to give up on them, but to be more selective, said Kim Forrest, senior equity research analyst, Fort Pitt Capital Group in Pittsburgh. She is looking for companies that are gaining market share in the retail, technology and materials sectors.

Yes, tomorrow is Friday, so we can expect funds and others to get out rather than spend the weekend in sleepnessness, especially at such a tumultuous and ominous time of upheaval in the world scene.

European markets are in a big sea of red right now.

Europe market also plunged deeply. Global markets are interconnected. Moreover China is not a small economy. If it' s ill, the whole world will catch the virus.

At least HSI, perhaps a bit more understandable cos it' s one country, two sstems, n the economy there has so much more links to the mainland (although we know that in truth, there' s a lot of massaging too). But sgx leh? Why so badly affected practically every day. Are we two countries one system with PRC?
