US stocks close sharply lower as all eyes turn to debate financials lag

U.S. equities closed sharply lower on Monday, with financials and health care lagging, as market watchers kept a close eye on a key OPEC meeting and seen ahead to a U.S. presidential debate.

" The market was basically priced in a Hillary Clinton victory," said Randy Warren, chief investment officer at Warren Financial Service. " If it' s a big victory for Hillary, then no one will watch the next two debates and the market is going to go Back to business. If it' s a big victory for Trump, then no one will watch the next two debates and everyone is going to be freaking out. "

" Investors are waiting to see what happens at the presidential debate," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at First Standard Financial. " The market has not been affected by the elections, but now they are."

The first of three debates will be held at Hofstra University and is set to begin at 9 p.m. ET.

" This is a market thinking about several things. First and foremost, the U.S. election. The market is used to pricing in monetary policy, but a national election is a bit more difficult," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities.

Crude oil prices gained on Monday, after media reports cited the Algerian energy minister saying all options were possible for an output cut or freeze. US oil rose 3.26 percent to settle at $ 45.93 per barrel.

Gold futures for December delivery settled $ 2.40 at $ 1,344.10 per ounce.

Straits Times Index
2,849.94 -0.25% -7.01▼

Volume: 1,251.6M
Value: $662.4M
Gainers/Losers: 162/226

Singapore shares close lower, but pennies continue to shine.

The Straits Times Index (STI) may have drifted to a 7.01 point loss at 2,849.94 on Monday but the real action was once again in penny stocks, where the likes of Noble Group, Sunmoon, Ezra, Alliance Mineral and Artivision posted rise of at least 30 per cent in high volume during the day.

Although most surrendered their gains by 5 pm, punting in these stocks facilitating elevate unit volume to 1.3 billion units up from last Friday' s one billion units.

Brokers said that that most most of the churning of low-priced issues was largely speculative, transitional and prone to fizzle out very quickly, it at least giving traders a chance to make some money.

More Ang Ku Kueh in the pantry. Hooooh.

(Bloomberg) -- Tudor Investment Corp., the $11 billion hedge fund founded by billionaire Paul Tudor Jones, has closed its Singapore trading desk as part of a global shakeup, according to people familiar with the matter.

Stocks snap 3-day win streak but close higher for the week oil, Apple slide.

U.S. stocks closed lower on Friday, with energy falling more than 1 percent, as oil prices fell sharply while investors digested key manufacturing data, following two strong sessions.

" You never know what' s going to happen with these OPEC meetings," said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Boston Private Wealth. " You have Saudi Arabia offering a cut, but for that to happen Iran would have to agree to a [production cap ]. "

U.S. crude prices extended losses in late-morning trade and settled 3.97 percent lower at $ 44.48 per barrel after Bloomberg reported Saudi Arabia does not see an output deal being reached at Monday' s meeting in Algeria.

" I' m not buying into any OPEC freeze, but we still think oil is going to trend up," said John Conlon, chief investment officer at People' s United Wealth Management.

" The market is consolidating these strong gains following the Fed," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial. " I think the market is going to focus on oil prices after the Saudi Arabia report. Oil could be another driver in the market. "

" The S & P futures met resistance yesterday after gapping up on improved short-term momentum. We expect resistance to be surmounted after a brief pause refreshes the intraday uptrend," said Katie Stockton, chief technical strategist at BTIG, in a note to clients.

The September read on the Markit Manufacturing Flash PMI came in at 51.4, below the August read of 52.0. IHS Markit, the firm that released the data, said that the September number marked seven years of continuous growth in manufacturing, but that the " headline Index was below the average seen over this period (54.0) and remained close to the post-crisis low recorded in May (50.7). "

" After falling into contraction in August as measured by the ISM survey, the September data looks no better. The NY and Philly manufacturing indices seen last week imply another below 50 print and this Markit report suggests relatively stagnant activity," said Peter Boockvar, chief Market analyst at The Lindsey Group.

" As for a market response, they never do respond much to the Markit' s US PMI and focus more instead on the ISM. This is in contrast to the Markit prints overseas as it' s a good measure of international manufacturing and services," he said.
The data were released after the euro zone PMI showed that business activity in the 19-country region fell to 52.6 in September versus 52.9 in August and below market expectations. European equities fell Friday, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 index dropping around 1 percent .

Gold futures for December delivery settled $ 3 lower at $ 1,341.70 per ounce

Straits Times Index
2,856.95 0.38% +10.89

Volume: 1,003.2M
Value: $819.9M
Gainers/Losers: 188/184

Singapore shares close higher for the week.

THERE was no doubt that the US Federal Reserve' s Open Markets Committee (FOMC) meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday was the biggest event of the week just past, even though the knowing was almost complete certainty that there would be no interest rate hike.

In the days leading up to the meeting, the federal funds futures market was pricing in an 80 per cent chance that the Fed would not act - which as it turned out was the case.

Still, although the script played out as markets expected, it gave traders an excuse to either buy or cover their shorts on Monday and Tuesday, especially since there was also a Bank of Japan meeting where more monetary easing was expected. For the week, the Straits Times Index gained about 30 points or just over one per cent, including 10.89 points on Friday.

It also gave house traders and proprietary desks the opportunity to punt the second and third-lines, mainly penny speculatives such as ISR Capital and the three counters behind the penny crash three years ago - Liongold, Blumont and Asiasons. In ISR' s case, broking firms Phillip Securities and OCBC Securities this week placed trading restrictions on the stock, while others like UOB-Kay Hian and Lim & Tan have had the counter on their restricted list for some time.

Playing sg stocks is like playing binary options. Many ways to lose although it looks easy. Their advertisements will promise you heaven and earth but once you paid the deposit, you are very near to losing it. Factors you could lose are the split seconds change to eat your position before it moves back to the winning figures. All kinds of tricks, get actors to play as millionaires and show fake accounts. Remember they even tried to use Mr. Peter Lim as an example of people who played and became super rich. Beware, and never listen to their promises although it is small money US$250. Give to the poor if you like but not give the the scammers of binary options.

Likewise remember there are many ways to skin a cat, SGX knows how to do it. Lol.

Oil up $1 or $2 makes no difference. Most O& M counters need oil to be well over $60 to be viable,
