Singapore shares close mostly higher, albeit with unchanged STI
Singapore shares ended flat on mixed trading Thursday, as investor cautious ahead of the busy third corporate earnings season.
Penny stocks continued to be churned as they have for several months now, interest in blue chips was as soft as it has been for weeks and there was little direction forthcoming from overseas markets - Wall Street rose on Wednesday, but the Dow futures' early fall On Thursday added to the caution, while Hong Kong' s 0.8 per cent drop probably did not help.
Among the stocks that gained include Hyflux, which ended 1% higher on news that it is selling its entire 50% stake in a joint venture company to its partner for US $ 136.5 million.
Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. was up 0.4% after it reported a 4.5% rise in third quarter net profit from a year earlier.
Stocks that fell include Viva Industrial Trust, which lost 0.6% on news of its placement. Cosco Corp. ended flat as investor wary of the stock on news of its profit warning.

Best he doesn't make it - else he may well lead the US into WW3. No point making from shorting gains if you can't live to spend it.

Dow closes higher as Boeing gains offset Apple' s fall financials lead
U.S. stock closed mostly lower on Wednesday as earnings season continued, while solid economic data helped financials and oil extended its losing streak despite bullish supply data.

Singapore shares finish lower in low volume - again
IT' S difficult not to agree with trading representatives who claim that present market conditions are the worst in at least 20 years, not when turnover on Wednesday was a paltry 1.3 billion units worth S $ 734 million, when the Straits Times Index dropped 25.48 points to 2,828.57 and When a large institution such as HSBC Global Research announced earlier in the week it has stopped covering Keppel Corp, a bastion of the local market.
The average value per unit traded on Wednesday worked out to S $ 0.56, clearly pointing to where the market' s trading energies were directed. Those who view the glass as being half full might view the lopsided interest in penny stocks as presenting opportunities for investors to discover undervalued Gems those who see the glass as half empty - and these would count among the vast majority - would say there is something fundamentally wrong if the market is led by poor quality issues.

The Straits Times Index ends down 0.9% at 2,828.57. Sentiment in the market mirrors the bearish expectations plans have from the earnings.
OCBC' s net profit for the third quarter is expected to fall 4% on year, while that of UOB' s is likely to decline by 13%, according to estimates on FactSet. Third-quarter net profit for DBS, the biggest of the three banks, may Fall by about 9%.
